On February 14, 2018, 19 year-old Nicholas Cruz went to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, and used an AR-15 to kill 17 innocent people. Following this tragic event many students of Stoneman Douglas are anxious and scared about their return to school . BBC News wrote about the students utilizing appeals to pathos and appeals to pathos, http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-43223279. BBC utilizes appeals to pathos by talking about one students return: "Lyliah listed people she knew who would not be returning, including Joaquin Oliver, who sat just in front of her in a class they shared". This makes the reader sad because Lyliah sat just behind Joaquin and now she will never see him again. They also appealed to logos by talking about the number of students returning back to class: "At Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, a line of police officers, school staff and community members bearing flowers greeted some 3,000 students who returned to classes on Wednesday morning". The intended audience is anyone who wants updates on the situation because this shooting has become a catalyst for protests among the young and old. The authors purpose was to inform what has happened with the students of Stoneman Douglas.

The U.S. Women's gymnastics doctor, Larry Nassar, committed disgusting, heinous acts throughout his career as he sexually abused roughly 265 girls and women. BBC News wrote about the incident, utilizing appeals to pathos along with appeals to logos, http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42894833. BBC utilizes appeals to pathos by talking about the girls he sexually abused: "The first to speak was 17-year-old Jessica Thomashow, who told the court:"He first molested me when I was nine (...) before I had braces, and when I still played with my American Girl dolls." This infuriates everyone who reads this because he sexually abused a nine-year old girl. They also appealed to pathos by saying the amount of girls sexually abused by Nassar: "On Wednesday Judge Janice Cunningham told the small court in Charlotte, Michigan: "We have over 265 identified victims and an infinite number of victims in the state, in the country, and all over the world". The intended audience is anyone who may have gone through sexual abuse and want to read about the justice all of these girls and women are getting, or anyone who just wanted to know what happened. The author's purpose is to inform the public about the case.
President Trump has made it clear during his campaign and his presidency that he is going to be bold and very outspoken compared to other past presidents. Author Jonathon Marcus utilizes charged diction and appeals to pathos to discuss Trump's new national security strategy, //www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42406212 . An example of charged diction is when he is giving his thought of the strategy; "It sets out a pragmatic view of a turbulent and troubled world and it recasts some of the president's favourite slogans - not least his consistent call to put "America First" - in a new and unexpected light.". Marcus believes that the new plan is reasonable and can work. When explaining part of the new plan, Marcus appeals to pathos by talking about what Trump thinks is best concerning nuclear missiles: "On the US nuclear arsenal, for example, the document says that the "US does not need to match the nuclear arsenals of other powers" but that it should "sustain a stockpile that can deter adversaries". This creates some anxiety for citizens of America or any nation involved in the talks of nuclear war. The authors purpose was to explain to the public what Trumps new strategy entails and the intended audience is mainly U.S. citizens but also anyone who would like to know what America will be doing.
The third blog post is about the increasing amount of threat North Korean missile tests bring, www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-42160227 . The author's diction makes it seem like he is worried about the situation. They emphatically make "A problem without a solution" a sub title and write about what that means. The author appeals to pathos. They do this by writing about "the problem without a solution" and go into detail about all the different tests with missiles they have previously done. This scares the readers because we are at risk of getting struck by one of these missiles. They also talk about how North Korea is trying to build long range missiles that could reach mainland U.S.: "The North is thought to be focusing efforts on building long-range missiles with the potential of reaching the mainland continental US". The authors tone/attitude is very concerning and worried like the diction. They do this because besides the fact that they may actually be worried, it also brings attention to it. It also could be to put pressure the U.S. government to do something, but not something dumb to where we get bombed. The author's purpose is to let the public know about what is happening with the ongoing North Korea threat. Also for the tone/attitude, they could be pressuring the government to act and not just sit back or to urge them not to do something North Korea does not like.
For my second blog post I will be writing about the Governor of Florida's decision to issue a state of emergency ahead of an alt-right speech from BBC News, http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41654975. The author's diction does not tell create a lot of the author's emotion. The author did not write their own opinion and kept it hidden pretty well. They did this by quoting the people they are writing about and just explaining what is happening, but they do talk about what Spencer has done in the past and it brings a negative feeling toward him. They used ethos to explain past events that Richard Spencer was apart of and why the governor declared a state of emergency: "At that event in Charlottesville, which Mr Spencer helped organize, a large group of far-right activists chanted "Jews will not replace us" and "blood and soil" (a Nazi slogan)". This helps give the reader a clue to as who Richard Spencer is and he is not a very good person so bringing up his credits help add to why the Governor's decision is probably a good one. The author's tone is very minimal. They do not really show their emotion through the article as they just simply explain what is happening between the alt-right and the state of Florida. The author's purpose is to explain to the public that the governor of Florida has issued a state of emergency due to Richard Spencer speaking at the University of Florida on Thursday. The author does not show their position in the article, but the article is valuable because it tells us why the governor feels that why and Spencer's reaction.
The first article I will be doing for my blog posts is and article discussing how Trump thinks negotiating with North Korea is a waste of time, http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41460205. The authors diction in the article show that the author is concerned about the conflict and that he has a problem with Trump. The talks about how Trumps attitude is getting in the way from and discussion with North Korea; "It is not the first time Donald Trump has sought to contradict top officials within his administration.". The author appeals to pathos. He talks about the recent developments and tests of nuclear weapons for North Korea then talks about how Trump is not negotiating with Kim Jong Un; "...which has seen it perform repeated missile tests, as well as claim to have successfully tested a miniaturised hydrogen bomb which could be loaded on to a long-range missile.". The author does this to make the audience a little scared about the situation and a little mad that president Trump is not negotiating with North Korea. The authors tone/attitude is concerning and also a little mad Trump isn't handling it safely. The author talks about how Trump has contradicted what his administration has said. He also brings up the president's tweets, which to be honest are not professional, and does not support them. The author's purpose is to let the public know what is going on between the U.S. and N.K. They explain to us that Trump's Secretary of State has tried negotiating with N.K. but Trump says not to. He informs us on the ridiculous state of the U.S. and N.K. and how Trump is not making it better.
